Suppliers, subcontractors, insurers and equipment renters often ask the same thing: who in San Antonio is actually busy right now? Permits answer it. Every plumbing, HVAC, electrical or roofing job that needs a permit names the contractor who pulled it, and the City publishes that list.

Permits issued Sep 26 to Oct 25, 2026. Irrigation and landscaping firms file under the City's plumbing permit type, so they show as Plumbing.

Read it for what it is. A high count means many permits were pulled, which favours firms that file many small permits (an irrigation install or a water heater is one permit each). It is not a ranking of quality, licensing or price, and it is not a recommendation of any company.

Where the permits come from

  • Mechanical (HVAC): 495 permits

How we built it

  1. Pull the permits

All plumbing, mechanical, electrical, re-roof, foundation, solar and pool permits issued in the window from the City's Building Permits dataset on data.sanantonio.gov. 2,770 permits name a contractor.

  2. Group by company

Names are tidied (case, stray markers, a leading personal name before a comma) and companies that differ only by LLC, Inc or punctuation are merged. A firm filing under two different trade names still shows as two.

  3. Leave out people and property

No property addresses, owners or project names. Rows where the contractor is a person's own name are dropped, which also removes some real sole-proprietor shops.

  4. Count and rank

Permits per company, permit mix and last issue date. Sorted by permit count.

Source, licence and limits

  • Source. City of San Antonio, Building Permits, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution. Contains data from the City of San Antonio, Development Services Department. Checked 2026-10-25. We grouped, filtered and ranked the records.
  • Not endorsed. TX Openings is not affiliated with or endorsed by the City of San Antonio.
  • Limits. Only City of San Antonio trade permits are counted; new-building and remodel permits, work elsewhere and work needing no permit are not. Names are typed at the permit counter, so one company can sit under a differently spelled name.
  • If you contact a company. Do it lawfully: calls and texts fall under TCPA and do-not-call rules, and email under CAN-SPAM. Verify details first.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the data come from?

The City of San Antonio's Building Permits open dataset on data.sanantonio.gov, published by the City under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence. We group permits by contractor company.

Does a high permit count mean a good contractor?

No. It only shows who pulled the most permits. Firms that file many small permits, such as irrigation installers, rank high. It says nothing about quality, licensing status or price, and it is not a recommendation.

Why are irrigation and landscaping firms listed as Plumbing?

The City files irrigation work under a plumbing permit type, so landscaping and irrigation companies show as Plumbing.

Which permits are counted?

Plumbing, mechanical (HVAC), electrical, re-roof, foundation repair, solar and pool permits. On those, the City's contact is the contractor. New-building, remodel and repair permits are left out because their contact is often the property owner.

Are property owners or addresses included?

No. We use only the contractor company, trade and permit counts. Property addresses, owners, project names and individual-person records are left out, and contractors who appear to be a private person are dropped.
