Suppliers, subcontractors, insurers and equipment renters often ask the same thing: who in Austin is actually busy right now? Permits answer it. Every electrical, plumbing, mechanical or building job that needs a permit names the contractor who pulled it, and the City publishes that list.

Permits issued Sep 26 to Oct 25, 2026. Value is declared building-permit valuation; a dash means no building permits, so none in the source. Valuations are the declared value of the project, not money paid to the contractor.
Read it for what it is. A high count means many permits were pulled, which favours firms that file many small trade permits (a panel swap or a water heater is one permit each). It is not a ranking of quality, licensing or price, and it is not a recommendation of any company.

How we built it
- Pull the permits
All permits issued in the window from the City's Issued Construction Permits dataset on data.austintexas.gov. 3,938 permits name a contractor.
- Group by company
Names are tidied (case, stray markers) and companies that differ only by LLC, Inc or punctuation are merged. A firm filing under two different trade names still shows as two.
- Leave out people and property
No property addresses, owners or applicants. Rows where the contractor is a homeowner, an owner-builder or a person's own name are dropped, which also removes a few real sole-proprietor shops.
- Count and rank
Permits per company, building-permit valuation, top work class and last issue date. Sorted by permit count.
Source, licence and limits
- Source. City of Austin, Issued Construction Permits, the portal's licence field reads Public Domain U.S. Government (usa.gov/government-works). Checked 2026-10-25.
- Not endorsed. TX Openings is not affiliated with or endorsed by the City of Austin.
- Limits. Only City of Austin permits are counted; work elsewhere, or work needing no permit, is not. Work for one company can sit under a differently spelled name.
- If you contact a company. Do it lawfully: calls and texts fall under TCPA and do-not-call rules, and email under CAN-SPAM. Verify details first.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the data come from?
The City of Austin's Issued Construction Permits dataset on data.austintexas.gov (dataset 3syk-w9eu), published by the City under a Public Domain U.S. Government licence. We group permits by contractor company.
Does a high permit count mean a good contractor?
No. It only shows who pulled the most permits. Large companies and HVAC or electrical firms that file many small permits rank high. It says nothing about quality, licensing status or price, and it is not a recommendation.
Why are valuations blank for most electricians, plumbers and HVAC firms?
Only Building permits carry a declared job valuation in the source. Electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits have none, so those firms show a dash.
Are property owners or addresses included?
No. We use only the contractor company, trade and permit counts. Property addresses, owners, applicants and individual-person records are left out, and contractors who appear to be a private person are dropped.
